<lj:music>becoming jane</lj:music>

Things of note:

1. I got a residency! A job! Yay! Now I can plan my life accordingly, and it's only January! I can plan moving to St. Louis (where the residency is), moving to Chicago (after the residency), writing my thesis, looking for a job, sorting out the roommate situation, etc. I feel like I lost 10 pounds!

2. I bought this yesterday:
http://www.anntaylorloft.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=9093&N=1200022&pCategoryId=217&categoryId=220&Ns=CATEGORY_SEQ_220&defaultColorNameFromCategory=Cinema%20Silver&defaultSizeTypeFromCategory=Petite
For $15. My friend Liz who works there let all of the grads know about a sale that was one day only, so we all (12 of us) high-tailed it there after class, and I have been looking for a silver swing jacket for EVER. It loos cuter on me than on the model. But that's only because I like it better buttoned. I also got the most awesome blue wrap shirt, which I usually think are unflattering, but which actually makes me waist look pretty small. So exciting!

3. I will be meeting Julie Andrews on Wednesday. That is pretty amazing. I might wear my new jacket to do it. :)

4. This semester feels like finals all the time. I am exhausted, but it's the last one so I am sucking it up.

5. I got a new fish. He is nameless, but I am leaning towards one of these three:
1. The Bard
2. Captain Jack
3. Severus Snape
(or.....Tim Gunn).
Thoughts?

I think I have pulled so many all-nighters/had such a crappy and off-balance sleep schedule this semester that my body permanently thinks it's OK to be wide awake until around 4:30 every morning and then want to sleep until 1:00 in the afternoon. Of course, I can't always do that. Since I am sort of in limbo between end-of-the-semester work and finals (and since I don't have a real job right now-awesome-and I have more free time than usual), I present you with a list of things I do while everyone else in the world is sleeping.

WHAT I DO WHILE I SHOULD BE SLEEPING.
1. Bake cranberry-orange muffins FROM SCRATCH!
2. Read old-school Josh and Donna fanfiction. Don't judge me.
3. Eat dinner (this sleep schedule also equates to strange meal times)
4. Clean like a maniac.
5. Stalk people on facebook.
6. Read British Glamour.
7. Drink wine and/or tea.
8. Browse online for expensive clothes I can't own.
9. Do sit-ups.
10. Order Christmas gifts for other people.
11. Sing along loudly with the Enchanted soundtrack.
12. Laundry
13. make to-do lists for things that can only be done during daylight hours
14. Read homework (seriously!)
15. Search for strange keywords on YouTube.
16. post on livejournal

<lj:music>bill pullman! in while you were sleeping</lj:music>

2007 is a bad year for my pets.

My fish kicked the bucket last week (I think--he was kind of low maintenance, it could have been earlier). He was one hell of a trooper--his entire life is re-counted in this journal at various points.

I bought him when I moved into Arcadia the August before senior year, and I named him Dave Eckstein because I had just seen my last game at the "old" Busch Stadium, and it just so happened to be the game in which he hit a walk-off grand slam, thus cementing my ever-lasting love. And the fish was red and white, so naturally it needed a Cardinals name.

He barely survived that year in that nasty house, though, with the devil-cat who could open doors trying to eat him every time I turned around and with me having to keep him on the top of the bookshelves so the cat couldn't get to him. And that one time I dropped him into the sink strainer in the kitchen and he was flopping around and I kept yelling "help! help!" and finally one of my "tough, manly" roommates (ha!) came in and scooped him back into his bowl.

Then he rode between my feet all the way back to St. Louis where my mom kept watch over him while I worked in Kentucky. Then he rode IN THE BACK OF A U-HAUL all the way to Orlando when I moved for grad school and endured two long breaks with Tiffany fish-sitting. He lived a good, long life and he saw a lot of the world. RIP, Dave. You were a good pet.

I miss having a fish, and I want to get a new one, not to replace Dave, just cause I have a nice fish bowl that is going to waste. I think I will wait until after Christmas, though, so that no one has to watch him or her over the break. :)

A list of things of note tonight as I can't sleep:

1. Charlie and his fucking chocolate factory can bite me.

2. Yesterday I went to unplug the fog machine after the show, and I had never done it before, so I looked at the button with the red light on that said "power" and thought I would push it to turn the machine off, but CLEARLY that does not turn the machine off, because five minutes later I walked back out into the house only to not be able to see three feet in front of me due to fog that had been pumping into the theatre for the last five minutes. If you are curious, the button that says "off" turns the machine off. I'm brilliant, I know.

3. My shows tomorrow were canceled. bad for REP business, good for me. we have 45 more performances, so I think they will make plenty of money. It's not like I'm getting paid anything for this show that has made me lose 10 pounds (not that I'm complaining--my jeans look good, but seriously? Work should not cause malnutrition).

4. I really, really like Brothers and Sisters on ABC. It might be my only "must see" show of the year. 5. I like the soundtrack from Once a lot and now I want to see the movie more.

5. I have discovered a new wine I love. It's from Publix. I love Publix.

6. I don't have my cell phone and it is driving me CRAY CRAY.

I am so tired. Attempting to see Order of the Phoenix and midnight tonight was an epic undertaking, including other audience members in my particular auditorium asking HP trivia questions for 2 hours before the movie (I was the first one to get the question about the movie that Alan Rickman starred in with Emma Thompson in 2003, and the first one to answer David Tennant as the actor who played Barty Crouch Jr--and really, are we surprised?). I wore my muggle t-shirt with pride and Molly wore her "Voldermort votes Republican" shirt, and we were still in the upper half of the cool, non-nerds in line. I mean, scars on heads, robes, school uniforms, scarves, wands....people are nuts!

But it was worth it. I loved it. My favorite of the movies, I think.

I have to be up in less than four hours to teach kids about Shakespeare for eight hours tomorrow. I am soooooo sleepy. I wish I could just bring one of the Harry Potter movies and shut them up for three hours. Even though they're fairly well-behaved and I do like it. I need SLEEP to deal with them!

But it was stil worth it!

There are new and apparently awesome Who spoilers out there on the internets, and I want so very much to read them, but this is the first time I've been able to watch Who before the rest of the world knew what happened already, and I am really enjoying it. Keep me away from the spoilers! Please! Hold me back! I already read one on accident. Sadly.

Also, it's my birthday. Lame.

Birthday Week Update: Day 4

So, it's birthday week for your's truly! As Birthday weeks go, it's pretty tame, but it started with a bang, and I hope it ends that way. Here's a rundown:

Saturday, Day 1: I went to the Cardinals game with my parents, which is not unusual, but we had the $200 seats behind home plate that include dinner before at a fancy schmancy restaurant that is right behind the seats and all you can eat food and drink during the game. It was awesome! We lost, but it didn't matter because it was so fun!

Sunday, Day 2: I bought myself a birthday present (a new summer skirt-navy blue with white polka dots and two pockets on the front). I also went to work, but that's not a birthday festivity.

Monday, Day 3: Returned a birthday present that was a duplicate to Macy's and got a super cute shirt, special Cecil's dinner of pizza and salad, went to Shakespeare in the Park to see Much Ado About Nothing.

Tuesday, Day 4: Birthday week day off....I had to work for 12 hours.

Wednesday, Day 5: Shopped for a shirt to wear out on my birthday, got 3 birthday cards and flowers in the mail.

Thursday, Day 6: Plans are to pre-order Harry Potter and to get a manicure.

Friday, Day 7: Plans are to watch a marathon of "North and South," and get rootbeer floats before work.

Saturday, MY BIRTHDAY: I have to work for 12 hours, which bites, BUT the following good things will occur:
1. in my 2 hour dinner break, mom is taking me out for sushi
2. going out after the second show to drink, and people from work are coming too
3. Captain Jack is back on Doctor Who (I consider this a birthday present from Russell T. Davies and the Who crew. They love me.)

So, it's not the world's greatest birthday, but hopefully it will be better than the last few, which have suuuuuuuuucked.

In other news:
Currently listening to: a lot of Mika, who is perky summer fun, and Patty Grifin
Currently reading: "The Stolen Child" and I just finished "Rasputin's Daughter" by Robert Alexander
Currently watching: Pan's Labrinyth, which was pretty visually amazing.

I am lame.

I didn't mention yesterday, but another reason I have been having a rough week and earned a drunken night is because my dog, Nickie, passed away last Friday. It's strange, but I don't remember losing a pet really (our dog was put to sleep when I was 7, but I don't really remember), but it really upsets me. I think I'm in a really, like, raw place emotionally from the end of the semester and stuff, but still. It's easier now, but I keep thinking about going home next week and how he won't be there. It's really tough. Anyway, I just wanted to say that he was kind of a snob, and he chewed everything all the time, but I loved him lots, and I'm gonna miss him.

Break!

A little known secret about me (or well known. it's not even really a secret.):
When I have to pull all-nighters, I like to put Jane Austen film adaptations on in the background. This all started with a marathon session of Emma and calculus my senior year of high school, but it was put into full swing during costume design my sophomore year of college.

I am currently working to the peaceful sounds of the BBC P&P. Much love. 2005 P&P will follow.

However, how did I never realize that Dr. House was in Sense and Sensibility?!?! That's my old reliable of Jane Austen film adaptations--I think I have watched it over 100 times! And yet, it wasn't until tonight I realized Hugh Laurie was hanging around and being snarky. I want to see him do something that isn't snarky, though, because his character in Sense and Sensibility is sort of like is House got trasnported back in time, you know?

Anyway, shocking discovery tonight. What's next, is Josh Jackson going to be in Mansfield Park? (ha! I wish! love you, josh!)

I'm exhausted and yet I can't sleep. I have to get up and out of the apartment in five hours. Sucks. I'm going to type this, then make some tea and do the dishes/pack my bags. Hopefully by then I will be sleepy.

We lost power for about an hour tonight. It's been drizzly all day, but not enough to knock out power lines--and it wasn't just out complex, but the ones around us, too. Straaaange. We drank mixed drinks (sonic screwdrivers!), played with my flashlights gel book for my lighting class, met out neighbors for the first time ever, and went for a walk. An hour well spent. :)

I thought at one point in time I really liked the TWOP recaps for Doctor Who. Now I have realized just how...pompous....they are. Suck. Oh well. It's not like I'll have to deal with a new one anytime soon.

I've been saving this:

You can go back in time and erase from the fabric of TV history THREE individual episodes of any TV show you want! The rest of the series(es) will not be altered. What do you choose?

01: West Wing: "Access." That was when I stopped watching on a regular basis.

02: Gilmore GIrls: "Written in the Stars." It could have been done so much better. In my mind, the show stopped at the end of season 4.

03: Buffy: "Doublemeat Palace." Enough said.

You can go back in time and revive ONE unfairly cancelled television show and return it to the annals of TV history!

Sports Night. No contest. I would have really liked to see more, even with the damn dating plan.

To balance out the historical TV viewing schedule, you now have the power to retroactively CANCEL, at any point during the series, any one show! Alternately, you can wield your destructive might and DELETE one whole entire series from ever having been made.

Hmmmm.....Studio 60. There. I said it. Wasted potential. I hope all of the wonderfully talented people who worked on it aren't screwed out of jobs in the future.

LIFE AND DEATH! You can now bring ONE character back from the dead... and, to restore the balance, you must also kill off a character! They don't have to be from the same fandom.

Life: Leo.

Death: Dawson.

Bonus trade off: you can delete a single scene, relationship pairing or plot arc from any series that gave you hives... AND you can plug in any one [scene, pairing, plot arc] that you never got to see!

Delete: I think I would have liked to not have had to deal with a new election on The West Wing. I kind of liked both characters, and it was very well acted and not terribly scripted, but the show had no focus when it left the white house (in general--all of those times they're on Air Force 1 I generally take a bathroom break), but it was especially hard with so many characters hopping around who BELONGED in the white house (*cough* Josh *cough*)..........I would also delete the tax subplot from Slings and Arrows season 2. Because it's a waste of my time.

Insert: Backstory episodes for the Sports Night characters....how did Dana and Casey meet? Was Natalie always so high-strung? I want an "In the Shadow of Two Gunmen" for that show!

Should Totally Have Happened Plot Arc:

Sam and Ainsley FOREVER.

The kid apparently answered the question "Who do you think was inside the blue box" with a very hesitant "the doctor?" and a look of disdain.
"Smith and Jones" was wonderful. It was really a fantastic episode of Who. Despite my openmindedness about the cool-factor of Martha, I kind of expected to dislike her a bit (I am loyal by nature and I love Rose/Billie), but I loved her! Note-perfect reactions to the doctor's cra-zay, and she is just different enough from Rose while still maintaining the bits that made Rose a perfect companion for the Doctor. I hate to talk about shipping, particularly with Doctor Who, but the Doctor loves Rose ("she knows"!), and I don't think Martha's awesomeness is going to change that too much.

SO, the torrents and I don't get along (but I WILL not give up), but I caught the episode on YouTube before the BBC went nutty and made whoever put it up take down parts of it--right now the second half is still up, but who knows for how long? Here's my thing: I get copyright infringement and whatnot, but I think the BBC is being stupid. I watched the entirety of both series on YouTube (save the christmas invasion, which I saw on google video), and I still spent money I didn't have to by both series on DVD. I wouldn't have ever spent that money if I hadn't been able to see them--I don't get BBCAmerica, and I don't watch SciFi). I guess I just think it's bad business sense to make people take them down, because I KNOW there are other people like me out there who will still buy them.

I am SO excited about The Shakespeare Code next week...I hope someone puts it on YouTube. TIffany wants to watch them all before then so she can watch it with me....heehee!

FINALLY, I saw Blades of Glory this weekend, and I really like it. My cheeks hurt from laughing. I also yelled out "The Pemchenko!" at one point, and everyone sitting around me got the reference, which made me so happy. I love figure skating movies of any kind. Two thumbs up.
